Walking New York Cover by JR for The New York Times

Category: Art -

French artist JR created a large-scale pasting for the Walking New York issue of The New York Times Magazine. JR is known for pasting giant photographs on urban surfaces all over the world. For this project, New York Times Magazine commissioned JR to create this giant cover art. They decided they would photograph recent immigrants and paste their images on the city’s streets, where they and other immigrants are often invisible. JR photographed 16 people who arrived in New York within the last year but they picked this guy named Elmar Aliyev. The pasting was made in the heart of Manhattan, on Flatiron plaza, the triangle of pavement between Fifth Avenue, Broadway and East 23rd Street. Final work was photographed by JR from the helicopter.
