Portrait Paintings with Text on Stamp
Claude Chandler is an artist from Cape Town who modernizes the traditional portrait by mechanically etching it into text. He creates acrylic paintings on stretched canvas with stamp.
How does it work?
First, he makes a stamp by using foam letter cut outs. He assembles a name or word which has a connection with the subject. Then he continuously stamps and layers the print, working almost "blind" but mindful of structure and tonal values. The image finally emerges: transformed in a coded and industrialized web of paint.
